Problems with the electric steering column adjustment in the Audi Q5 (2017, diesel): Experiences and solutions
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
The discussion revolves around a problem with the electric steering column adjustment in the Audi Q5 (2017, diesel). The user experiencing the problem suspects a defect in the motor for the steering column adjustment, as the steering column can no longer be adjusted. Another user shared a similar experience with an Audi Q3, where the issue was a defective cable connection to the steering column motor, which was repaired in a workshop. The user with the problem has taken the car for a fault readout but has not received results yet. There are no specific error messages, and the car has a mileage of 88,390 km. Another user suggested that the problem might be due to wear and tear given the mileage, or possibly a minor issue. Another user with a similar problem in an Audi A4 B8 Avant 2.0TDI built in 2012 suggested that the issue might be due to not having the track adjustment done after replacing the bearings for the front control arms. A professional mechanic advised checking the wiring and getting the wheel alignment checked, as not doing so after replacing the bearings could potentially cause issues with the steering.

Hey, thanks for your reply. I've just taken the car in for a fault readout, but I don't have any results yet. There are no specific error messages so far, just the fact that the steering column can no longer be adjusted. There doesn't seem to be any noise or anything like that. By the way, my car has a mileage of 88390 km and the last inspection was recently. I'll keep you posted when I know more. Thanks again!

Hello again. Thanks for the additional info. On my car, the problem with the cable connection occurred around the 80000 km mark, so perhaps it seems to be a kind of "commonality". Stupid if there are no error messages, unfortunately that makes troubleshooting a bit more difficult. But it's great that you've already had a fault readout done. With your mileage, it could of course be that something is simply worn out. Maybe you're lucky and it's just a minor issue. Keep your fingers crossed that it won't be too expensive! Let us know what you get out of the selection. All the best!

Yes, it really seems that there is some kind of "common ground". Thanks for your support. It's always more difficult when there are no error messages. The car is now in the workshop, so I'll let the professionals get to work first. Of course I'm hoping for something minor, wear and tear wouldn't exactly be what I want either. But we'll see. Thanks for the thumbs up, I can really use them! As soon as I know anything new, I'll let you know. Have a nice day!

Hello everyone, On my Audi A4 B8 Avant 2.0TDI built in 2012, the error occurred while driving and has not been cleared since. I had replaced the bearings for the front control arms on both sides a few months previously and had not yet had the track adjustment done. It could possibly be due to this, I will now also be removing the steering cover soon and checking the wiring. 235000km

It's a good idea to check the wiring as you mentioned, but also consider getting the wheel alignment checked. If the bearings were replaced and the alignment wasn't done, it could potentially cause issues with the steering. After you've checked these, please let us know how it goes. Do you have any other questions or concerns?

Hello, I had a similar problem with my Audi Q3 (built in 2015, diesel). I'm not a professional, but I do know a bit about cars. When I got the fault in my garage, it turned out that the cable connection to the steering column motor was defective. They repaired it in the workshop and I had to pay 155 euros. To help you more accurately, would it be good to know if you have any specific symptoms or error messages? Has a fault readout already been carried out? The more information we have, the better we can help you here.
