Problems with the engine control light on the BMW 5 Series, model year 2015: suspected position sensor error in the fuel filler flap
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A 2015 BMW 5 Series owner is experiencing a check engine light issue and suspects a position sensor error in the fuel filler flap. The car runs normally despite the warning. A suggestion is made to visit a garage for a fault diagnosis to determine the exact cause, which could be the fuel filler flap sensor or another sensor like the boost pressure or lambda sensor. The issue is likely not serious and should be relatively easy and inexpensive to fix.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply! At my last service with 54368 km everything was fine, no problems. The error message is unfortunately not very specific, it just says "engine fault - visit workshop". The car otherwise runs normally, no abnormalities when driving. The fuel filler flap position sensor wasn't working properly a few weeks ago, could that be it?

Hey, no problem! Well, on my BMW, the check engine light came on once because of a sensor error. But that was an EGR valve and not the position sensor of the fuel filler flap. The sensor error could also be the case with your BMW, but it is not certain that it is exactly the fuel filler flap position sensor. It could also be something else, for example the boost pressure sensor or the lambda sensor. You should perhaps go to a garage and have the fault diagnosis device connected there to see what exactly the fault is. You might then have to replace the sensor, whatever it is, but it's actually not too expensive an operation. It cost me around €100 at the time, all inclusive. Maybe it's the same for you, so it would be good to have it checked. However, in my experience, you can continue to ride normally as long as there are no visible abnormalities. So don't worry too much, it should be relatively easy to fix.

Hey, thanks for your help! You've really helped me out. I will follow your advice and take the car to the garage to find the exact problem. I really hope it's nothing serious and won't be too expensive. I'm reassured to hear that I can continue driving as long as there are no visible problems. I'll keep you posted on how it goes. Thanks again!

Hi, I have experience with similar problems. I owned a 2017 BMW 3 Series, I have little experience with cars, but I was in a similar situation. When I described the problem to my mechanic at a garage, we discovered that the cause was a faulty fuse. That cost me €52. Can you please give me more details about the error message or the condition of the car? I might be able to help you better with more information.
