Problems with the engine electronics and potential EGR valve problem in a 2005 Peugeot 406
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
The 2005 Peugeot 406 is experiencing engine electronics issues, including the engine light being on, stalling, lack of power, rough running, strong exhaust smell, and shaking when idling. These symptoms suggest a potential problem with the EGR valve. A similar issue was resolved by replacing the EGR valve, which restored engine performance and eliminated the symptoms. Checking and possibly replacing the EGR valve is recommended as a solution.

Hey, thanks for your quick reply! Good idea to check the rest of the car. I last had an inspection 185780 km ago and they said everything was tiptop. Sure, something could have changed since then. It's crazy that the EGR valve can cause so much trouble. Just under 355 euros is quite a lot of money. Did you at least drive quietly afterwards? Thanks again for the help, really great!

Hey, no problem, always happy to help! So after the EGR valve was replaced on my Peugeot, it ran like clockwork again. No more problems starting, the engine light stayed off and the engine power was back. The shuddering at idle and that funny exhaust smell were also gone. You could say that the 355 euros were well invested. It was a bit expensive, but definitely better than constant new problems and high fuel bills due to poor performance. So have a look at the EGR valve, it really could be the cause. Good luck, buddy!

Hey, really a relief to hear that everything went smoothly again after the repair! I'll definitely focus on the EGR valve and get that checked. It would be great if that really is the culprit, although the 355 euros hurts of course! But sure, better to invest properly once than have new problems all the time. Thanks for the valuable advice and for sharing your experiences - totally helpful! Good luck to you and your Peugeot too!

Hey, I once had a very similar problem with my 2004 Peugeot 408. Although I don't really have much experience with cars, I had to solve the problem with the garage. The engine light was on and the power just wasn't there. It turned out to be the EGR valve that was defective and stuck. To fix the whole thing, I had to have the EGR valve replaced. I paid a total of 355 euros. About your car, are you sure that all the other parts are in order? Don't forget to check the rest of the car as well to rule out any other potential problems. Hope that helps and good luck buddy!
