Problems with the oil light and metal shavings in the oil on a 2017 Opel Karl - Possible defect in the engine oil pressure switch
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A 2017 Opel Karl owner is experiencing issues with the oil light being on and finding metal shavings in the oil, suspecting a possible defect in the engine oil pressure switch. A potential cause identified is the use of incorrect engine oil, which could lead to metal shavings due to improper lubrication. Suggested solutions include using the correct oil, cleaning the engine, and reading OBD error codes to diagnose further. If problems persist, visiting a garage is recommended.

Hi, thanks for your help! I have indeed changed the oil recently, it could be related to that. I didn't know that the wrong oil could cause such problems. Unfortunately, I can't remember the exact engine designation. But the problems started a day or two after the oil change. I didn't read out the OBD error code, I didn't even know that was possible. The last time maintenance work was carried out on my Karl was at a mileage of 70684 km. Maybe that will help you.

Hi, thanks for the information. So it could really be that the wrong oil has caused the problem. Metal shavings in the oil are never good, they indicate that something is rubbing in the engine that shouldn't be rubbing. This could have been caused by the wrong oil, but other problems could also play a role. With engine oil, it's not just about the viscosity, i.e. the "thickness" of the oil, but also about the specific additives that are important for your particular car. In my Adam, I topped up with the right oil and cleaned the engine, after which everything was back to normal. I would definitely recommend this as a first step. Reading the OBD codes is also interesting. There are these little plugs that you can plug into your OBD port and then use an app on your cell phone to read out the error codes. This could also help you to diagnose the problem. A plug like this doesn't cost much and can be really helpful. Since you said you filled in the wrong oil and the problems only came a few days later, this could definitely be related. It's best to take a look at your owner's manual or call your Opel dealer and ask exactly which oil belongs in your Karl. And don't forget: If the engine makes strange noises or there are other noticeable symptoms, go straight to the workshop. The engine is not to be trifled with. Good luck in solving the problem!

Hello, thank you for the detailed answer! That does sound logical and explains some of the symptoms. I will follow your advice, find out exactly what oil I should use and have the engine checked/cleaned. Reading out the OBD codes also sounds practical, I'll see if I can get hold of a connector like that. If the situation doesn't improve, I'll definitely visit a garage. Thanks again for your help!

Hi, My Carly is picking several ECM errors that don't seem obvious to diagnose? P0336 Crankshaft position sensor performance P0521 Engine oil pressure sensor performance P0671 Cylinder 1 glow plug control circuit P068A Engine controls ignition relay de-energised too early P2015 Intake manifold runner control valve actuator inner performance C0055 Not valid data came from electronic brake control module Then in TCM U0073 Controller area network bus communication The only error I can actually diagnose is the faulty glow plug for cylinder 1, the rest might as well be Russian? If you can offer any advise that would be appreciated. Thanks

Hello K3nco, It seems like you have a variety of issues going on. I would suggest starting with the P0336 code for the crankshaft position sensor. This sensor provides important information to the engine control unit for fuel injection and ignition timing. If it's malfunctioning, it could potentially cause other issues. Check the sensor and its wiring for any visible damage. If you can't find any, you might need to replace the sensor. Once you've addressed this, clear the codes and see if any of the others persist. Please keep us updated on your progress.

Hi, I have a bit of experience with cars and had a similar problem with my 2015 Opel Adam. I'm not a professional, but I've done a few things myself. It sounds to me like there may have been incorrect engine oil in the engine. This was the case for me once and I had roughly the same symptoms as you. I took the car to the garage, who cleaned the engine thoroughly and filled it with the correct oil. The cost at the time was around 175 euros. To be able to help you further, it would be important to know when the problems started and whether you have recently changed the oil. The exact engine designation would also be helpful. Have you ever read out the OBD error code?
