Problems with Toyota Camry 2007: Black smoke, loss of power and suspected faulty mixture control

Hi guys, I have a problem with my 2007 Toyota Camry with gasoline engine. Does not run as usual, gives black smoke from the exhaust when accelerating and the check engine light is on. Longer cold start time, loss of power, jerking when accelerating, poor fuel economy, strong exhaust smell are the symptoms I have noticed. I suspect that the problem could be caused by a faulty mixture control (mixture too lean). Has anyone had similar problems and can give me some troubleshooting tips? How did you get it fixed at the garage and what were your experiences? Any tips are welcome! Thank you!

Summary of the thread

A 2007 Toyota Camry is experiencing issues such as black smoke from the exhaust, loss of power, jerking during acceleration, poor fuel economy, and a strong exhaust smell, with the check engine light on. The suspected cause is a faulty mixture control, possibly due to a lean mixture. A suggestion was made to check the lambda sensor, as a similar issue was resolved in another vehicle by replacing this component. The owner plans to take the car to a garage for further diagnosis and potential repair.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2009 Toyota Aurion. I'm not a car mechanic, but I do have some experience with cars. At my garage, the mechanic read out the fault code and it turned out that the lambda sensor was faulty. I paid 375.0 euros to have it repaired. You might want to have that checked too. But to give more details, could you tell me how many kilometers your Camry has run and when you had the last service? Hope that helps!

Hey, thanks for your suggestion. My Camry currently has 100717 KM on the clock and the last service was only recently. Maybe I really should have my lambda sensor checked. That could be the culprit. I think I'll take it to the garage later this week. Thanks again for the tip!

No problem, always welcome! With that many kilometers, all sorts of things could actually start to go haywire. And the lambda sensor is one of those components that can simply wear out over time. So it really wouldn't be a bad idea to have it checked. It could drive up the fuel consumption and also the exhaust values. Anyway, the swap helped me and the symptoms you described are pretty similar to the ones I had. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's nothing worse! Let us know what comes out of the workshop!

Will do, thank you! Your words give me some confidence in the whole thing. I already feared last weekend that it would be expensive again. That will teach me a lesson so that I can have such things checked in good time in future. It's good that you shared your experience with me here, thank you very much! I'll let you know again when there's news from the workshop! See you then, I also hope that this was the last major problem with your Aurion for a while!
