Problems with weak vehicle battery and flickering lights in the 2021 Ford Mondeo
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A 2021 Ford Mondeo owner is experiencing issues with a weak battery and flickering lights, suspecting severe battery discharge. A suggestion was made to check the control unit, as a similar issue in another vehicle was resolved by replacing a defective control unit. Another recommendation is to measure the battery voltage at idle to determine if the alternator is failing to charge the battery properly, which could also cause flickering lights. The owner plans to follow these steps to diagnose and resolve the problem.

Hi, thanks for the tip about the control unit, I'll have that checked. As for the mileage, it's currently at 131938 km and it hasn't been too long since the last service. Hopefully it's not something serious, as my Mondeo is otherwise in top condition. Thanks again for your help!

Hi, that sounds like a well-maintained Mondeo! Given the number of kilometers and the condition of your car, I wouldn't suspect a faulty battery, especially if it has only recently been serviced. Self-discharge can happen, but usually in cars that have not been driven for a long time. Perhaps you could measure the battery voltage when the engine is off and when it is on for comparison. If it is well below 12V when idling, the alternator may not be charging your battery correctly - that would also explain the flickering. I'm not a mechanic, so it would be best to have this checked by a professional. Hope that helps you!

Hello, thank you very much for your advice. Now I know a bit more about what I need to have checked. The first thing I will do is measure the battery voltage at idle to rule out the alternator. If that doesn't give me anything, then I'll have a look at the control unit. You have really helped me. Thank you and send you a virtual handshake! Take care!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2019 Ford Focus. My experience with cars isn't the best, but I've done a few things myself. In my case, the problem was a defective control unit. My garage found it and replaced it for me. It cost me around 600 euros, unfortunately. Maybe that could also be the cause of your problem. Could you perhaps provide some more information about your car? Perhaps mileage, general condition or when you last replaced the battery? That might tell us more. Hope that helps you a little!
