Q5's Power Loss Tied to Lean Fuel Mix Issues

My Q5 (2022, gasoline, 67k km) is acting up with power loss and jerky acceleration. The check engine light is on and the engine feels rough when running. After reading up, it seems like a lean fuel mixture could be the culprit. What could be causing this? Last mechanic visit left me with trust issues, so looking for feedback before picking a shop. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and what was the fix? Worried it might be the fuel injectors or throttle body.

Had nearly identical issues with my 2019 A4 2.0T. The symptoms perfectly match what turned out to be faulty fuel injectors. The rough idle and power loss were clear indicators of improper fuel delivery. The repair involved testing all fuel injectors, which showed two were severely clogged and one had internal mechanical failure. This affected the air-fuel mixture, causing the lean condition. Required complete replacement of the problematic fuel injectors and cleaning of the intake manifold, which had carbon buildup from the uneven fuel spray pattern. This is definitely a serious issue that needs prompt attention, as faulty fuel injectors can lead to: Increased engine wear, Higher emissions, Risk of catalytic converter damage, Further performance degradation The mass air flow sensor and EGR valve were also tested during diagnosis but were functioning correctly. Would strongly suggest having all fuel injectors tested and cleaned or replaced as needed, rather than just replacing the problematic ones, to prevent similar issues from occurring soon after. For proper diagnosis, a shop should perform: Fuel pressure testing, Injector spray pattern analysis, Full computer diagnostic scan, Intake manifold inspection This is not a job for basic maintenance shops, requires specialized diagnostic equipment and expertise with direct injection systems.

Exactly the same thing happened with my Q5 early last year. The check engine light came on followed by the power issues. Initially I thought the throttle body needed cleaning but turned out the injectors were the main problem, just like in your case. After getting the injectors replaced and intake manifold cleaned, car runs like new again. No issues since the repair. Never had to touch the EGR valve or spark plugs which was a relief. Did you track the total repair cost? Wondering if prices have changed since my repair. Also curious if youve had any other symptoms pop up in the months after fixing it?

You nailed it regarding the repair issues. After having the mechanic fix my A4 last week, the engine is running perfectly again. Turned out it was a faulty injection valve causing the lean fuel mixture, which explained all those power and acceleration problems we discussed. The total repair came to 515 Euro for replacing the defective fuel injector, including parts and labor. The check engine light is now off and the engine runs smoothly, no more rough idle or power loss issues. Really glad I didnt need to replace multiple injectors like in your case. No other symptoms have appeared since the fix. The throttle body was inspected during the service but was clean and working properly. Having a proper diagnosis done was worth it, as it pinpointed the exact fuel injector that was causing the lean condition. Smart move getting yours fixed promptly, neglecting faulty fuel injectors can definitely lead to bigger problems down the line. Going to a specialist who properly diagnosed the issue helped avoid unnecessary parts replacement.

Thanks for getting back with the update on your injector repair. Finally took my Q5 to a reputable import specialist last Thursday after the symptoms got worse. The diagnostic testing confirmed two bad injectors plus carbon buildup in the intake manifold. Total bill came to 890 Euro, definitely not cheap but worth every cent. They showed me the clogged injectors and explained how it was causing the lean fuel mixture. The mass air flow sensor readings were good, which helped narrow down the problem. The repair took about 6 hours including cleaning the intake manifold and replacing both injectors. Car feels completely different now, smooth idle, strong acceleration, and no more check engine light. Such a relief after dealing with those issues for weeks. The mechanic also checked the oxygen sensor and catalytic converter while they had everything apart, but both tested fine. Going to stick with this shop from now on since they took the time to explain everything and show me the faulty parts. Lesson learned about not waiting too long when engine problems first appear.
