Q5 Key Fob Failure: Battery vs System Malfunction Fix

My Q5 (2017, gas, 74k km) key fob stopped working properly. It wont unlock the car and shows a key battery low warning on the dash. Tried both keys with same result. System shows some error code but mechanic gave me a ridiculous quote for diagnosis alone. Anyone dealt with similar electronic key issues? Looking for advice if this is just a simple battery replacement or potentially something bigger before I spend money at the shop.

The low battery warning for key fobs often indicates a simple fix. When my 2014 Audi A4 2.0T showed similar symptoms, both key fobs stopped working simultaneously. The dashboard displayed the key fob battery warning, and remote unlocking became inconsistent. While a dual key fob failure might seem concerning, this is actually common. Key fob batteries typically last 3-4 years and often fail around the same time since they were likely replaced together during previous service. The fix required standard CR2032 battery replacement in both fobs. However, if new batteries dont resolve the issue, the problem could relate to the key fob receiver module or antenna. These electronic components rarely fail but require professional diagnostic equipment to verify. A quick test: try holding the physical key fob directly against the steering column while starting the car. If this works better than normal distance operation, this confirms its likely just low battery rather than a system malfunction. For proper diagnosis, the vehicle needs professional scanning equipment to read the exact error codes, but start with fresh batteries before pursuing more complex electronic diagnostics.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Actually went through this exact problem with my Q5 last month. New key fob batteries fixed the issue, and the low voltage warning disappeared right away. The auto key system has been working perfectly since the battery swap, both for unlocking and starting. Just needed fresh CR2032 batteries for both fobs. Did you get yours fixed? Would be helpful to know the repair cost if you went through with it. Also curious if any other electronic quirks showed up after you dealt with the key fob issue.

Thanks for the update about your Q5. I had the exact same resolution, got my dead key fob issue fixed at the shop last week. The low battery warning cleared immediately after they replaced the batteries. Total cost was 37 Euro for both key fobs, including installation and key reprogramming. No other electronic problems have surfaced since the battery replacement. Both key fobs work perfectly now for unlocking and starting. The car key system has been completely reliable with the fresh batteries installed. The low voltage warnings were definitely just from weak batteries, exactly like your case. When car key batteries get too low, these warnings are usually the first sign before complete failure. Much better to address it early than risk being stuck with a completely dead key fob.

After putting this off for weeks, I finally got it fixed yesterday. The shop charged me 42 Euro total, batteries plus labor. Much better than the 200 Euro diagnostic fee another place quoted me. The electronic key system works perfectly now. Both fobs unlock the car smoothly again and the low battery warning disappeared from the dash as soon as they swapped the batteries. The mechanic mentioned these CR2032 batteries typically need replacement every 3-4 years, so I made a note to check them again in 2027. No other issues came up during the repair. The car starts right away and all key fob functions work like new. Definitely glad I checked here first instead of paying for expensive diagnostics. Sometimes the simplest solution is the right one.
