Q5 Steering Column Fix: Warranty Repair Alert

Got a concerning steering issue with my 2023 Audi Q5 (gas, 17630km). The electric steering column stopped adjusting and theres an error code stored. Had some questionable work done at my last mechanic visit, so Im hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with a similar steering column adjustment issue? What was the fix and how much did it cost? Looking for recommendations on handling this, since the cars still under warranty.

Summary of the thread

A 2023 Audi Q5 experienced an electric steering column adjustment failure, with error codes indicating a problem. The issue was traced to corroded wiring connectors at the steering column base, a common problem in electronic steering systems. The recommended solution was to have the vehicle serviced at an authorized dealer, where the damaged connectors were replaced and the system recalibrated. The repair was covered under warranty, and the steering function was fully restored without any cost to the owner.

Had the same electric steering adjustment failure on my 2020 Audi Q3. The steering column stopped responding and displayed error codes, pointing to connection issues. The problem stemmed from damaged wiring harness connectors at the steering column base. Salt and moisture had corroded the main plug connections, disrupting the electronic steering controls. This is actually a common failure point in these electronic steering systems. Since your Q5 is under warranty, get it to the official dealer. The repair requires accessing the steering column assembly, replacing damaged connectors, and recalibrating the electronic steering system. In my case, they also updated the steering control module software. This is a safety-critical repair that needs proper diagnostic equipment and expertise. The steering column must be perfectly aligned and calibrated after any work. A general mechanic might lack the specialized tools needed for this electronic steering repair. With your low mileage and 2023 build date, this is likely covered under warranty. Document everything and avoid unauthorized repairs that could void coverage.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the steering issue, it really helps knowing what to expect. Would you mind sharing how much the repairs ended up costing you? My Q5 is showing similar steering failure symptoms and while its under warranty, Im curious about potential costs if anything else needs fixing. Also, has the problem stayed fixed or have you noticed any other steering column issues since the repair?

I went ahead and got it checked at an authorized shop. The steering issue turned out to be simpler than expected, just a faulty connection in the electronic steering system that needed fixing. Total cost was 95 Euro for the repair, which included fixing the cable and plug connection. Since getting the electronic steering column adjustment repaired, everything has worked perfectly. No more error codes or steering failure warnings. The technician mentioned these connection problems are fairly common in the electronic steering systems, but once properly fixed, they rarely come back. Even though your Q5 is under warranty, its good to know the repair costs are reasonable if you ever need similar work done outside warranty. The key is getting it diagnosed and fixed promptly to prevent any additional steering issues from developing.

Thanks for the input. Took my Q5 to the dealer this morning and got it sorted. The mechanical fault was exactly as described, corroded wiring connectors causing the steering column adjustment issue. Since it was under warranty, I paid nothing. The service advisor showed me the damaged parts and explained how moisture had affected the electric steering components. They replaced the connection assembly and ran a full diagnostic to ensure no other steering failure points. The whole repair took about 3 hours. Really glad I went with the dealer instead of risking a non-specialized shop. The steering works perfectly now, smooth column adjustment and no more error codes. They also documented everything for warranty purposes, which gives me peace of mind.
