Q5 Transfer Case Issues: Gear Shifts and Slipping Alert

Looking for help with my 2013 Q5 2.0T that started showing transmission issues recently. When accelerating or changing gears, I notice inconsistent shifting and occasional slipping. Did some research and suspect it might be related to transfer case oil wear, but not entirely sure. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms and had them fixed? Particularly interested in what the actual problem turned out to be and how the repair was handled. Any insight on repair costs and specific fixes would be greatly appreciated. Currently at 120000km if that helps.

Had the exact same issue with my 2015 Q5 3.0T about a year ago. As someone who has some experience with transmission work, those symptoms immediately pointed to transfer case problems. The grinding noise during gear changes and inconsistent power delivery turned out to be caused by defective gears in the transfer case. Transfer case oil analysis showed significant mechanical wear and metal particles. The workshop confirmed extensive gear wear inside the transfer case itself. Total repair came to 330 Euro, including new transfer fluid and replacement of worn components. The fix resolved all shifting issues and restored smooth gear transitions. To better assist with your specific case, could you share: Any unusual noises during acceleration? Does the problem get worse after the car warms up? Have you noticed any vibrations through the floor? When was the last transfer case oil change? The repair process takes about a day, but getting the right diagnosis is crucial. Given your mileage, it sounds like a similar issue to what I experienced, but those additional details would help confirm.

Had my Q5 serviced last week at 104022km and noticed similar symptoms soon after. Workshop found transfer case issues too. After checking gear wear patterns and getting fluid analysis, they confirmed internal mechanical wear was causing the shifting problems. Repair cost was around 450 Euro including new transfer fluid and gear components. The car shifts perfectly now and all vibrations are gone. Just make sure they also check the sensors during repair, as they can contribute to shifting problems if faulty. Based on the service history in my case, regular oil changes could have prevented some of the extensive gear wear. Worth keeping that in mind for preventive maintenance. Would recommend getting it checked soon before the wear causes more damage to the transmission system.

Thanks for the update on your Q5 repair. Glad to hear you got it sorted. My experience was very similar, the gear oil analysis was key to confirming the internal wear before any major damage occurred. The cost difference makes sense since you had additional sensor work done. When they did my repair, the sensors were still in good condition. The main issue was just the gear wear and contaminated transfer case fluid. Regular oil maintenance really is crucial. Since my repair last year, I've been religious about checking for any oil leakage and getting the transfer case fluid changed according to schedule. No gear grinding or shifting issues since. One thing I noticed post-repair that might be worth mentioning, the transmission actually feels smoother than it did even before the problems started. The fresh gear oil and new components made a noticeable difference in overall performance. Have you noticed any improvement in fuel economy since the repair? My consumption dropped slightly after everything was properly serviced and aligned.

Thanks everyone for the helpful responses. Yes, I have noticed better fuel economy since the repair, about 10% improvement. The transmission definitely feels much smoother now than it did even before the problems started. The workshop did a thorough oil analysis which showed significant gear wear and metal contamination in the transfer case oil. They replaced several worn components and did a complete oil change. Total cost was similar at 420 Euro. For anyone else facing similar symptoms, I strongly recommend getting it checked early. Regular oil changes and transfer case maintenance could have prevented the extensive gear wear in my case. The repair process was straightforward once properly diagnosed, took about 6 hours total. My shifting issues and vibrations are completely resolved now. The transmission shifts perfectly and the car feels like new. The mechanic showed me the oil leakage points they found and fixed during the repair, which helped prevent future problems. Will definitely stick to the recommended maintenance schedule going forward to avoid similar issues.
