Quest spongy brake pedal

I'm having a weird issue with my 2016 Nissan Quest, gasoline engine. I noticed the brake fluid level is low, and the brake pedal feels kinda spongy? I've checked for leaks around the wheels, but haven't found anything obvious. Any thoughts?

Summary of the thread

The initial problem was a spongy brake pedal and low brake fluid level in a 2016 Nissan Quest. The likely cause suggested was worn brake pads, as they can lead to increased fluid usage and a spongy feel. Although a failing master cylinder was considered, worn brake pads were identified as the more common issue. The solution involved replacing the brake pads and flushing the brake fluid, which resolved the problem.

Spongy pedal and low fluid on a 2016 Quest usually means one thing: your brake pads are likely worn down! As they wear, the caliper pistons extend further, requiring more fluid from the master cylinder to fill the space. Have you checked the pad thickness lately?

Thanks! I haven't actually checked the pads themselves yet, I was too focused on leaks. Is it possible for it to be something else, like the master cylinder itself? I remember my old truck had problems with that...

While a failing master cylinder could cause a similar issue, worn pads are the far more common culprit with those symptoms, especially on a Quest with that mileage. I'd bet money that's your problem. Still, braking is pretty important stuff, I'd strongly suggest you get it looked at ASAP at a workshop.

You were totally right! Took it to the shop, and it was indeed worn brake pads. New pads and a fluid flush later, and the pedal feels great again. Cost me about 480€ all-in. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
