R Klasse oil temperature warning light issue

Hello, I'm experiencing an issue with my 2017 Mercedes R Klasse, gasoline engine, which currently has 78406 km on the clock. The engine oil temperature warning light keeps popping up on the speedometer, and the error memory has also logged a corresponding fault. To make matters worse, the oil pressure warning lamp occasionally flickers on as well. Could a faulty engine oil temperature sensor be the culprit? I suspect the cable or plug connection of the temp sensor might be defective. Has anyone else encountered a similar problem? I’m trying to figure out if replacing the oil temperature sensor will solve it, or if there’s something else I should be checking before potentially shelling out around 95€ for a new sensor.

Dude, sounds like a total drag! I had almost the exact same thing happen on my R Klasse. Oil temperature issues are a pain! Check the oil sensor connection, man. Could be loose or corroded. Quick question: Does the temperature reading seem plausible before the warning light comes on?

Thanks for the quick reply! That's helpful. Regarding your question: the temperature reading seems normal for a while, then suddenly jumps erratically or drops to zero right before the warning light illuminates. Did yours behave similarly?

Yep, that's precisely what mine did! Erratic readings then BAM! Warning light. I'd say it's highly likely the oil sensor is the issue. I'd recommend getting it checked at a workshop, though. They'll confirm for sure, and save you the hassle of replacing it yourself if it's something else.

Thanks a lot for confirming! It's good to know someone else had the exact same symptoms. I'll take your advice and get it checked out at a shop. Turns out it was indeed the temperature sensor and the cost was just about as expected. Replaced it and all good now. Appreciate the help!
