Ractis Brake Light Failure

I'm experiencing a peculiar issue with my 2012 Toyota Ractis, gasoline engine, at 170933 km. I'm getting intermittent brake light failure, accompanied by an error message on the infotainment system and an error stored in the error memory. It started a few weeks ago, seemingly at random. I've checked the bulbs, and they appear fine. Could it be a faulty brake light switch, maybe some sort of short circuit? I have heard about similar issues in other car brands.

Summary of the thread

A 2012 Toyota Ractis was experiencing intermittent brake light failure, accompanied by an error message. The issue was suspected to be related to a faulty brake light switch or a short circuit. Upon further investigation, it was found that the cruise control was also malfunctioning, which pointed to the brake switch as the likely cause. The problem was resolved by adjusting the brake switch alignment, eliminating the error without needing replacement.

Sounds like a classic brake light switch problem. Is the error triggered only when you depress the brake pedal, or does it also appear at other times? Does the cruise control work as expected?

The error seems to appear randomly, even without pressing the brake pedal sometimes. As for the cruise control, I haven't tested it recently. I'll check it later, but what would that indicate?

The cruise control uses the same signal from the brake switch to disengage. If the cruise control is also acting erratically, it would further point to a faulty switch. Since the error appears randomly, without pressing the brake pedal, the problem is more likely in the sensor itself. Given the symptoms, it’s best to get the switch checked out at a workshop.

Thanks for the advice. I checked the cruise control, and it was indeed malfunctioning. I checked the brake switch, and it turned out it was not properly set! I just adjusted it so that it was properly aligned. Now everything is working as expected and the error is gone. No need to even change the switch. Saved me some money!
