Ractis Engine Stalling at Idle
Summary of the thread
The 2017 Toyota Ractis is experiencing engine stalling at idle, with the check engine light on and an error stored. The suspected cause is a faulty idle air control valve, potentially due to heavy carbon buildup in the intake manifold. It is suggested to inspect and clean the throttle body and intake manifold, as carbon deposits can restrict airflow and affect the valve's performance. Visiting a trusted workshop for a thorough inspection and potential repair is recommended.

Thank you for the suggestion. I have not yet inspected the intake manifold. Could heavy carbon buildup really cause the idle air control valve to malfunction? Is that a common issue?

Yes, excessive carbon buildup can definitely affect the idle air control valve's performance. In my case, the deposits were restricting airflow, preventing the valve from properly regulating the idle speed. Eventually the dealer told me that I have to replace the whole thing. I would suggest you visit a trusted workshop.

Understood. I appreciate the confirmation regarding the carbon buildup issue. I will take your advice and bring it in to my local shop. They found the intake heavily contaminated as you described. Repair cost is estimated at 425€. Thank you again for your help.

I had similar engine stalling issues with my old Opel Astra. Check engine light, error codes, and the engine would just die when stopped at lights. For me, the intake manifold was heavily contaminated with carbon deposits. Have you checked the condition of your throttle body and intake? That might be a good starting point.
