Range Rover Diesel Stalling? ECU Issues & Solutions

Thanks for sharing your experience! My Range Rover has 156633 KM and was just serviced last month. I did get it scanned at a local shop and they found multiple error codes, but honestly, I'm not too tech-savvy with these diagnostic things. The problems started about three weeks ago, first just occasional problems, but now it's getting worse almost daily. The weird thing is, it actually runs better when the engine's cold. Once it warms up, that's when it starts acting up more frequently. The cutting out and rough running usually kicks in after about 15-20 minutes of driving. That ECU repair cost you mentioned isn't cheap, but if it fixes all these issues, it might be worth it! Did you notice any early warning signs before your ECU completely failed?

Hey again! Yes, what you're describing makes me even more convinced it's the same ECU issue I dealt with. Actually, the warm engine symptoms are exactly what I experienced, my Range Rover also ran better when cold, then got worse as it heated up. As for early warning signs, yes, definitely! Before my ECU completely went south, I noticed the engine would occasionally hesitate when accelerating, especially during highway merging. The check engine light would sometimes flicker before staying on permanently. Mine had about 165000 KM when this happened, so we're in the same ballpark mileage-wise. One thing I didn't mention in my first reply, before replacing the ECU, my mechanic tried cleaning the electrical connections and reflashing the existing unit, but that only helped for about a week. Just a heads up so you don't waste money on temporary fixes like I did! If your symptoms are getting worse daily like mine did, I'd recommend getting it checked soon. These ECU issues can sometimes lead to complete failure, which is what happened to me, got stranded at the worst possible time! Let me know what you decide to do. I'm curious if it turns out to be the same problem.

Thanks so much for all this detailed information! It's really helpful to hear from someone who went through the exact same thing. You've basically described my situation perfectly, especially that hesitation during acceleration that I've been experiencing too. I didn't mention it before, but I've also noticed that flickering check engine light! I think I'll stop by my mechanic this week before things get worse. Really don't want to end up stranded somewhere! Good tip about not wasting time with the cleaning and reflashing, I'll make sure to mention your experience when I take it in. Those temporary fixes would just be throwing money away. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. It's given me a much clearer picture of what I'm dealing with. I'll definitely go get it checked out before it turns into a complete failure like yours did. Thanks again for all your help!

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars and faced something very similar with my 2005 Range Rover Sport diesel. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I went through last year. My issue turned out to be a faulty ECU (Engine Control Unit). Started with unusual stalling, rough running, and those annoying warning lights. After trying basic fixes, I took it to my trusted mechanic who diagnosed the ECU was failing. The repair cost me 625 Euro with labor, but it solved all those problems completely. I also own a Range Rover Velar, so I'm quite familiar with these vehicles. However, before I can offer more specific advice, have you scanned for error codes? When did these symptoms first start? Does it happen more often when the engine is cold or warm? This info would help determine if you're dealing with the same issue I had.
