Ranger EGR Valve Issue

My 2023 Ford Ranger diesel with 139k km has lost power, check engine light is on. When accelerating, especially uphill, it smokes and jerks. It runs rough, fuel consumption is up, and there's a loud hissing sound when I accelerate. Vacuum leak?

Sounds like an EGR valve issue. The symptoms you're describing – reduced power, check engine light, smoke, rough running, increased fuel consumption, jerking, and hissing – all point in that direction. Rough idle too? Error code?

Rough idle, yes. I haven't checked the error code yet, I don't have a code reader. What does the EGR valve do, and why would it cause these problems?

The EGR valve recirculates exhaust gases back into the engine to reduce emissions. If it's defective or jammed open, it can mess with the air-fuel mixture, causing rough idling, reduced power, and the other issues. A faulty EGR valve can trigger the check engine light and cause the hissing sound if there's excessive exhaust leakage. Considering all the symptoms, and especially the hissing sound, get it checked by a workshop.

Thanks! The shop confirmed it was the EGR valve. They replaced it, and now it's running perfectly again. Cost me 355€, but worth it to get rid of that awful smoke and hissing!
