Yeah, replacing the control unit completely solved it. It's not a cheap fix, unfortunately. The dealer said it was a defective control unit. Given your symptoms and that error code, I’d really recommend getting it checked by a good shop.

That sounds really familiar. I had almost the exact same thing happen with my old Audi A4. The symptoms you're describing – the erratic shifting, the grinding, and the dead gear indicator – all point to a potentially faulty control unit. What error codes are you getting?
