RAV4 AC refrigerant compressor failure
Summary of the thread
A 2005 Toyota RAV4 diesel with 192498 km is experiencing air conditioning issues, with the system not cooling and a warning light on the dash indicating a refrigerant compressor failure. Possible causes include a defective compressor, refrigerant leaks, or a faulty AC control unit. The suggested solution is to have the vehicle inspected by a professional, which led to the discovery of a defective air conditioning control unit that required repair.

Thanks for the reply! I haven't noticed any obvious leaks, but I'll double-check. When you say 'kick in', what should I be looking or listening for? Any specific noises or visual cues?

Well, you'd normally hear a click when the compressor engages, and the engine might bog down slightly as it takes on the load. If you're not hearing anything at all, and the system's throwing a compressor failure code, it points to a bigger problem than just low refrigerant. Could be the compressor itself, or even the AC control unit. Honestly, at that point, I'd get it to a workshop. They'll be able to properly diagnose it.

Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. I took it to a mechanic, and it turns out the air conditioning control unit was defective, like you said. Repair cost me 980€ Appreciate the help!

Hey, that sounds familiar! I had a similar AC issue with my RAV4. Does the compressor even try to kick in, or is it totally dead? Have you checked for any obvious refrigerant leaks, like oily residue around the AC lines or compressor itself? It might just be a leak, but these things can be tricky.
