RAV4 Fuel Injection Problems

My 2010 Toyota RAV4 with a gasoline engine is having issues. At only 29697 km, it starts poorly, fuel consumption is higher, and engine power is reduced. It idles unevenly and sometimes stalls. I suspect a defective injection nozzle, maybe a dirty injection valve. Has anyone else had similar problems with their RAV4?

Summary of the thread

A 2010 Toyota RAV4 is experiencing poor starting, increased fuel consumption, reduced engine power, uneven idling, and occasional stalling, suspected to be due to a defective injection nozzle or dirty injection valve. Fault codes indicate issues with the fuel injectors, suggesting they may be clogged. A similar case was resolved by replacing a clogged injector, and it is recommended to have the injectors professionally inspected and possibly replaced to address the problem.

I've got a Toyota RAV4 too, not sure of the year, but I had a similar thing happen. The poor starting and rough idle sound familiar, and I noticed the fuel economy was taking a hit. I’m no expert, but did you check your air filter and mass airflow sensor? Sometimes a dirty MAF sensor can cause similar symptoms. I thought it was something diesel-related at first, but it turned out to be affecting the injection system. Did you check for any error codes with an OBD2 scanner?

Thanks, I appreciate you sharing. I did check the air filter, and it looks good. I haven't checked the mass airflow sensor, but I will. As for the OBD2 scanner, yes, there were fault codes for the fuel injectors. You mentioned it was affecting the injection system - could you say what that was?

Okay, so the error codes pretty much confirm that the fuel injectors are the issue. In my case, one of the injectors was clogged. It started with the rough idle, and then the power loss became really noticeable. I tried a fuel injector cleaner, but it only helped for a short time. I ended up taking it to a workshop, and they replaced the injector. It fixed the problem immediately. With those fault codes and the symptoms you're describing, I'd recommend getting it checked by a professional. It could save you a lot of headaches.

I see, thanks again. Based on your recommendation and the fault codes, I will take the car to a workshop to have the fuel injectors inspected and, if necessary, replaced. The estimated repair cost is around 515€. I appreciate you sharing; it has been extremely helpful.
