RCZ Gear Shift Indicator Failure

My 2012 Peugeot RCZ diesel is giving me grief. It's got about 198k kilometers on the clock, and suddenly the gear shift indicator display is completely dead. It's like the car doesn't know what gear it's in! Obviously, it's not possible to engage the gears and the automatic transmission is shifting all over the place. It slips, it shifts uncleanly and makes horrible grinding noises when shifting. Plugged it into a code reader, and sure enough, error codes galore related to the transmission. Could this be the kiss of death for my beloved RCZ? Has anyone ever experienced anything like this?

Summary of the thread

A 2012 Peugeot RCZ diesel with approximately 198,000 kilometers is experiencing a complete failure of the gear shift indicator display, causing erratic automatic transmission behavior, including slipping and grinding noises. The issue is accompanied by numerous transmission-related error codes. A similar problem in another vehicle was traced to a faulty control unit, suggesting a potential electrical issue. The recommended solution is to have the vehicle diagnosed and repaired by a professional workshop, which confirmed a defective control unit as the cause.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

That sounds rough! You won't believe it, but I had something similar happen with my old Vauxhall Insignia a few years back. The gear indicator went haywire, and the transmission started acting like it had a mind of its own. Slipping gears, refusing to shift...the whole shebang. Did you notice any other weird electrical issues around the same time, or just the gear indicator?

That's wild! Electrical issues, you say? Hmmm... now that you mention it, the instrument panel lights seem to be slightly dimmer than usual, but I just chocked that up to old age. You think there's a connection? Was it a straight forward fix on your Insignia?

Yep, the dimmer lights could definitely be related. In my case, it ended up being a faulty control unit that was screwing everything up. Honestly, don't waste too much time poking around yourself. Bite the bullet and get it to a workshop who know what they're doing. It could save you a whole lot of frustration in the long run.

Okay, I hear you loud and clear. Workshop it is! Thanks for sharing your experience; it's good to know I'm not completely alone in this nightmare. Took your advice and brought it to a shop. They diagnosed a defective control unit. Quoted me around 1000€. Ouch! But at least it's a diagnosis and I know what needs doing. Thanks again!
