Renault Modus engine jerking

Hi, I'm having trouble with my 2004 Renault Modus, 1.4 gasoline engine. It's got 144206 km on the clock. Recently, the engine's been running really unevenly. The check engine light comes on, and the error memory has something stored. When accelerating, it feels like the car is jerking. Could this be something simple like needing new spark plugs or maybe an ignition coil issue? Or could it be something more serious like the timing belt? I'm a bit stumped.

Summary of the thread

A 2004 Renault Modus with a 1.4 gasoline engine is experiencing uneven running, engine jerking during acceleration, and a check engine light. Possible causes include issues with spark plugs, ignition coils, or a more serious problem like the timing belt. However, a similar case was resolved by identifying an exhaust leak near the manifold, which caused similar symptoms. It is suggested to have the exhaust system pressure tested at a workshop to confirm and address the issue.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey there! Sounds frustrating. I had a similar issue with my Renault Modus. Does it almost feel like an engine misfire? Have you checked for any obvious leaks in the exhaust system? That was the culprit for me once. Could also be the oxygen sensor acting up. Is it idling rough as well?

Thanks for the quick reply! An exhaust leak... that's an interesting thought. I haven't checked specifically for that. Where exactly should I be looking for a leak? And yes, the idling is a bit rough, now that you mention it. Would an exhaust leak really cause such a noticeable jerking when accelerating, though?

Well, with mine, the leak was near the manifold, and yeah, it caused a noticeable jerking, especially when accelerating. The rough idle plus the jerking and the check engine light… does sound similar. Honestly, might be best to get it to a workshop and have them pressure test the exhaust system. Could save you a lot of guesswork!

Okay, thanks a lot for the advice! I appreciate it. I'll get it checked out at a workshop. It was indeed a leak in the exhaust system. Repair cost me 265€. Thanks again!
