A loose connection, eh? Interesting... When you say 'fuel components', which ones exactly did you check on your Volvo? I'm not the most mechanically minded, so a little more detail would be massively appreciated. Where should I be poking around exactly?

Okay, so on my Volvo, it was the connection to the fuel composition sensor. It's part of the fuel system, usually near the fuel rail or the fuel filter. I'm not intimately familiar with the Renault Modus, but I'd recommend taking it to a workshop. They'll be able to diagnose it properly. This isn't something you can fix on the fly.

Thanks for the tip! It turns out it WAS a defective plug connection. The mechanic charged me 95€ to fix it and it's running smoothly again. You were spot on. Thanks a lot!

That sounds frustrating! I had a similar issue with my old Volvo, though it was a petrol engine. Same symptoms: check engine light, rough idling, and weird error codes. Did you check the cable and plug connections to the fuel components? In my case the connection to the fuel sensor had come loose. Could that be your problem too?
