Renault SM3 engine power loss and smoke

My 2011 Renault SM3 with a gasoline engine has lost power, the check engine light is on, and there's smoke when I accelerate. The engine runs rough, fuel consumption is up, it jerks, and I hear hissing. It's done 128781 km. Could it be the EGR valve? I've read it can cause these issues. Could it also affect the catalytic converter or cause emissions test problems?

Sounds like it could be the EGR valve. Have you checked for any obvious leaks or blockages? Have you tried cleaning the valve itself?

I haven't checked for leaks or blockages yet, I'm not really sure where to start. Is it easy to check the EGR valve or is it better left to a professional? And if it's blocked, could that also mess with the vehicle emissions, and what are the chances it could cause issues with the catalytic converter?

If you aren't confident, it's best to take it to a workshop. EGR issues can cause increased emissions, potentially leading to catalytic converter problems in the long run, but that's not always the case.

I took it to the workshop, and it turned out to be exactly what I suspected: the EGR valve was defective and jammed. The repair cost me 355€. Hopefully, this fixes everything and it won't cause any more problems.
