Renault SM3 engine power loss and smoke
Summary of the thread
A 2011 Renault SM3 experienced engine power loss, increased fuel consumption, rough running, and smoke during acceleration, with the check engine light on. The suspected cause was a defective EGR valve, which can lead to increased emissions and potentially affect the catalytic converter. The issue was confirmed and resolved at a workshop by repairing the EGR valve.

I haven't checked for leaks or blockages yet, I'm not really sure where to start. Is it easy to check the EGR valve or is it better left to a professional? And if it's blocked, could that also mess with the vehicle emissions, and what are the chances it could cause issues with the catalytic converter?

If you aren't confident, it's best to take it to a workshop. EGR issues can cause increased emissions, potentially leading to catalytic converter problems in the long run, but that's not always the case.

I took it to the workshop, and it turned out to be exactly what I suspected: the EGR valve was defective and jammed. The repair cost me 355€. Hopefully, this fixes everything and it won't cause any more problems.

Sounds like it could be the EGR valve. Have you checked for any obvious leaks or blockages? Have you tried cleaning the valve itself?
