Renegade Black Smoke: PCV Valve Warning Signs

I am having trouble with my 2019 Jeep Renegade (gasoline, 119500km). Recently noticed dark smoke when accelerating and reduced power, plus check engine light is on. Does this sound like a PCV valve issue? Had some bad experiences with mechanics before and want to make sure what to expect before going in for repairs. Would appreciate if anyone has dealt with similar emissions or ventilation issues on their Renegade and can share their maintenance experience and rough cost estimates.

Had nearly identical symptoms on my 2016 Jeep Compass with the 2.4L engine. The crankcase ventilation system was indeed defective, causing oil to enter the intake manifold. This resulted in dark exhaust smoke during acceleration and engine power loss. The malfunction triggered the check engine light due to incorrect air-fuel mixture and rising emissions. The root cause was a failed PCV valve that allowed excessive oil vapor to enter the intake system. Additionally, there was buildup in the intake ports that required cleaning. The repair involved: Complete PCV system replacement, Intake manifold cleaning, New valve cover gasket to address a minor leak, Software update to reset adaptations This was a serious issue that needed immediate attention to prevent internal engine damage. The repair took about 6 hours at the shop. The symptoms disappeared completely after fixing, and idle quality returned to normal. Regular oil changes help prevent this type of failure. Since your mileage is similar to when mine failed, these symptoms strongly suggest PCV system problems that should be addressed soon to avoid more extensive repairs.

Thanks for providing such helpful details about the PCV system repair on your Compass. My situation with the Renegade sounds nearly identical, especially the smoke and power issues during acceleration. Finally took it to the shop last week and got it fixed. The idle is now much smoother and emissions are back to normal. Curious how much your repair ended up costing? And have you had any related ventilation or valve issues pop up since getting it fixed?

The PCV system repair on my Compass came to 360 Euro total, which included parts and labor. Since fixing the crankcase ventilation valve malfunction, the engine has been running perfectly with no smoke or power problems. Regular maintenance helped prevent any further valve or ventilation issues from developing over the past year. The repair shop did a thorough job cleaning the intake system while replacing the PCV components, which likely contributed to the long-term fix. The investment was worth it to stop the oil leak and restore proper crankcase pressure. My engine idle has stayed smooth and the emissions have remained normal since the repair.

I took my Renegade to the shop after getting your advice and you were spot on about the PCV system. The mechanic found exactly what you described, bad ventilation valve and oil contamination in the intake. Cost me 420 Euro total with parts and labor. They had to keep it for a day to do a thorough cleaning and replace several components. The smoke issues cleared up completely after the repair. Engine runs much stronger now and no more check engine light. Really glad I got it fixed before causing more damage. The maintenance receipt shows they replaced the PCV valve, cleaned the intake manifold, and updated some software settings. Thanks again for helping me identify the problem. Saved me from getting overcharged or having unnecessary work done. Will definitely keep up with regular oil changes to prevent future valve issues.
