Rogue Hybrid Gearbox Slips
Summary of the thread
A 2017 Nissan Rogue Hybrid with 216,576 km is experiencing gearbox slips and unclean shifts, suspected to be due to transfer case oil wear. The issue may be caused by low or burnt transfer fluid, which can lead to shifting problems. Checking the fluid level and condition involves removing the fill plug on the transfer case, as there is no dipstick. If the fluid is low, dark, or smells acrid, it may indicate defective gears. The recommended solution is to have the vehicle inspected by a workshop, which confirmed defective gears in the transfer case, costing 330€ to repair.

I haven't checked for leakage. Is there a dipstick for the transfer fluid, or how do I check the level? Is there anything specific I should look for in the old fluid?

No dipstick, unfortunately. You'll need to remove the fill plug on the transfer case to check the level. The fluid should be level with the bottom of the fill plug hole. If it's low, that's a sign. Burnt fluid will be dark and smell acrid, potentially with metal shavings indicating defective gears. Given the symptoms and mileage, defective gears in the transfer case might be the issue. I'd suggest getting it checked by a workshop, likely running around 330€.

Thanks for the info. I'll check the fluid and take it to a workshop as you suggested. Turns out you were spot on, workshop confirmed defective gears in the transfer case, costing 330€ to repair.

Interesting. Have you checked the transfer fluid level and condition? Low or burnt fluid can definitely cause shifting issues. Any signs of oil leakage around the transfer case?
