RS3 Steering Stiffness Points to Sensor Malfunction

Thanks for the detailed reply about your S4! Yeah, this sounds really similar to what I am dealing with in my RS3. The electronic stability light started flickering yesterday too, which makes me think its definitely sensor-related. Did everything stay fixed after the repair? Also wondering what the total cost was for all that work, my dealership quoted something that seems really high, so trying to get a sense if its in the normal range. Would be helpful to know if you had to go back for any follow-up adjustments to the wheel alignment or if the steering column needed additional work later on. Sometimes these issues can be connected and I want to make sure I address everything at once.

Good news, I can confirm everything stayed completely fixed after getting the steering angle sensor coding repaired on my S4. Unlike my initial complex repair scenario, it turned out the sensor issue alone was causing all the stability control and steering problems. The final bill came to 195 Euro for the sensor recalibration and coding fix. No need for any follow-up alignment work or steering column adjustments in my case. Once the angle sensor was properly recoded, both the heavy steering and stability control warnings disappeared completely. Looking back, I probably over-repaired initially by changing other parts. Your symptoms with the flickering stability light and steering issues sound exactly like what I experienced before the sensor fix. Since these systems are interconnected, a faulty steering sensor can trigger multiple warning signs. The 195 Euro I paid for just the sensor coding repair might be a good reference point to compare against your quote.

Just got back from the mechanic for my RS3. After reading about similar experiences, I insisted they focus on the steering angle sensor first. Turns out that was exactly the problem, they found incorrect sensor coding affecting both steering and traction control systems. The repair was much simpler than expected. They recalibrated the steering sensor and reset the system, which fixed both the heavy steering and stability light issues. Total cost was 220 Euro, way less than the initial quote that included unnecessary repairs. No alignment work or additional fixes were needed. The steering feels smooth again and the electronic stability light has stayed off. Really glad I did more research before agreeing to extensive repairs. Sometimes the simplest explanation is the right one, especially with these sensor-related problems. Would definitely recommend getting a second opinion if a shop suggests major mechanical work without checking the sensors first. These modern cars rely heavily on proper sensor calibration for basic functions.

Had similar issues with my S4 (2019) last winter. The symptoms match exactly what you describe, heavy steering and vibrations pointed to potential sensor failure, but it turned out more complex. Initial diagnostic showed the steering angle sensor coding was faulty, affecting both the power steering and traction control systems. The root cause was actually a combination of wheel alignment problems and a deteriorated steering rack mount. The repair involved: Recalibrating the steering angle sensor, Full wheel alignment service, Replacing the steering rack mount, Resetting automotive sensors and system adaptations While the steering angle sensor needed attention, the main issue was mechanical. These symptoms should not be ignored as they can lead to uneven tire wear and compromised handling, especially at higher speeds where stability is crucial. The repair was significant but necessary for proper function of both steering and traction control systems. If your car shows these symptoms, getting a complete diagnostic rather than just sensor check would be wise.
