RS5 Cooling System Disruption Signals Radiator Crisis

Looking for advice with my RS5 that seems to have cooling system issues. The temp gauge shows weird readings, check engine light is on, and it takes forever to warm up. My gut says its a restricted airflow problem at the front grille. Car details: 2013 RS5, gas engine, 107637KM. Had a bad experience with my regular mechanic last time, so wanted to hear about similar cases and recommendations for fixes before taking it back in. Anyone dealt with radiator blockage issues like this in an RS5?

Having experienced similar thermal management issues on my 2016 S5, I can relate to these symptoms. The restricted airflow through the cooling grille was indeed the root cause in my case, but it ended up being more complex than initially thought. The problem turned out to be a combination of debris buildup in the radiator grille and a faulty coolant temperature sensor. The engine cooling system wasnt getting accurate temperature readings, causing irregular warm-up cycles and inconsistent gauge readings. The check engine light was triggered by the sensor malfunction. The repair required: Complete cleaning of the radiator grille and cooling system passages, Replacement of the coolant temperature sensor, System diagnostic reset, Coolant flush and refill This was a serious issue that needed immediate attention, as continued operation could have led to engine overheating and potential damage to critical components. The irregular temperature readings were masking a problem that could have gotten much worse if left unchecked. If your RS5 is showing similar symptoms, recommend getting the cooling system pressure tested and having the temperature sensors checked before assuming its just a blocked grille. These symptoms often indicate multiple related issues in the thermal management system.

Thanks for your detailed reply about the cooling system problems. That sounds exactly like what mine is doing. After cleaning and replacing the sensor, did the automotive cooling issues completely resolve? Been worried about potential damage to my RS5 from running it this way. Would be really helpful to know what the repair ended up costing you? Also wondering if youve had any other engine cooling problems pop up since getting it fixed? Want to get an idea of what Im looking at cost-wise and if I should expect any related issues down the road.

Thanks for asking about the follow-up. Since having the mechanic fix the restricted airflow at the radiator grille and replace the defective sensor fuse (52 Euro), the engine cooling system has worked flawlessly. The automotive cooling issues resolved completely and temperatures now read normally. The car overheating risks were eliminated after the repair, and Ive had zero temperature-related problems in the 8 months since. The engine now warms up properly and maintains consistent temperatures, even during heavy use. Its crucial to address these cooling issues promptly, the initial symptoms you described match mine exactly, and fixing them prevented any long-term engine damage. The repair costs were reasonable considering the potential problems that could have developed if left unchecked. The key was addressing both the physical blockage in the cooling system and the electrical component. Monitoring the temperature gauges for the first few weeks after repair showed the fix was successful, with no fluctuations or unusual readings.

Got the cooling system fixed last week, what a relief! Found a different mechanic who really knew their stuff about engine cooling problems. The total repair came to 780 Euro, which included cleaning out the radiator grille, replacing the temp sensor, and doing a full system flush. The restricted airflow issue was worse than expected, turns out leaves and debris had completely clogged the front cooling passages. They showed me the buildup they cleaned out and it was pretty shocking. The mechanic also found the temp sensor was failing, just like you mentioned. Car runs perfectly now, no more weird temperature readings or check engine light. The engine warms up normally and maintains steady temps even during highway driving. Really glad I got it sorted before any serious engine overheating damage occurred. For anyone else facing similar issues, definitely worth getting it checked out right away. The peace of mind knowing the cooling system is working properly is worth every cent spent on the repair.
