RS6 Camshaft Sensor Issues Causing Multiple Problems

Thanks for sharing those repair details. My RS6 just had its service at 41962 KM and these symptoms started appearing gradually over the last few weeks. The engine control unit is showing specific fault codes related to the crankshaft sensor circuit, making me think the issue might be different from your camshaft encoder wheel problem. The car stalling happens mostly when warming up, and sensor testing during the last service didn't catch this issue. Given the different symptoms and fault codes, I might need to focus on investigating the crankshaft position sensor rather than the camshaft components. Has anyone dealt specifically with crankshaft sensor replacement on these engines?

Interesting follow-up about the crankshaft sensor codes. After fixing my encoder wheel issue last year, I actually faced a similar crankshaft sensor problem about 6 months later, same stalling during warm-up that you describe. The crankshaft position sensor failure showed similar symptoms but had a distinct engine misfire pattern. Sensor testing confirmed the crankshaft sensor was sending irregular signals to the engine control unit, causing timing issues especially during warm-up. In my case, replacing just the crankshaft sensor fixed it. The repair was simpler than the camshaft encoder wheel job, took about 2 hours of labor and cost 320 Euro including parts. The key was using an OEM sensor, a cheaper aftermarket one might work initially but could fail prematurely. The workshop found some metal debris near the old sensor, which apparently contributed to its failure. They cleaned the area thoroughly before installing the new one to prevent similar issues. After replacement, they had to recalibrate the engine control system to recognize the new sensor properly. Your fault codes pointing specifically to the crankshaft circuit make this sound very similar to what I experienced. The gradual onset of symptoms also matches my situation.

Thanks everyone for the detailed responses. Given my specific fault codes and the way the symptoms have developed, I am now fairly confident it is the crankshaft position sensor causing these issues. The check engine light and stalling patterns match exactly what others have described with crankshaft sensor failures. I will have my mechanic focus on testing the crankshaft position sensor first, making sure to check for any metal debris that could have damaged it. The engine misfire symptoms during warm-up definitely align with what was mentioned about irregular sensor signals affecting ignition timing. Based on the feedback, I will insist on using an OEM sensor for the replacement to avoid future problems. The 320 Euro repair cost seems reasonable considering the labor involved and the importance of proper sensor calibration. Will update once I get it fixed to confirm if this resolves all the stalling and starting issues I have been experiencing.

Had similar issues with an RS4 (2019) last summer. Have some experience working with Audi engines and sensor-related problems. The symptoms match exactly what happened with my car, rough starts, stalling, and engine management light. Initially thought it was just the camshaft position sensor, but diagnostic testing revealed the encoder wheel on the camshafts was actually defective. This affected the entire engine control system and ignition timing. The workshop did comprehensive sensor testing and found that while the camshaft sensor readings were off, the root cause was the damaged encoder wheel. They had to: 1. Run full diagnostic tests 2. Remove timing cover 3. Replace encoder wheel 4. Calibrate new components 5. Reset engine control systems Total repair cost was 695 Euro, but it completely resolved the issues. Car runs perfectly now with proper ignition timing and stable idle. Which engine variant does your RS6 have? Also, when did these symptoms first appear, gradually or suddenly? This info would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced. If the symptoms are identical, you might want to have them specifically check the encoder wheel during diagnosis rather than just replacing the sensor.
