RS7 Transmission Nightmare: Shift Lock & Startup Failures

Having strange issues with my 2018 RS7 that seem transmission-related. Car refuses to start, check engine light is illuminated, and the automatic transmission shifts roughly. The shift lock seems problematic and the car throws transmission-related error codes. After some research, I suspect the transmission sensor or parking position mechanism might be faulty. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with their RS7, particularly related to transmission issues? Would appreciate feedback on repair costs and experiences with fixing this issue at workshops, especially regarding the parking mechanism in the automatic transmission. Currently, the transmission often fails to properly engage neutral position. How was your issue diagnosed and resolved?

As someone with intermediate experience working on Audi vehicles, I encountered almost identical transmission issues with my 2016 RS6. The symptoms were remarkably similar, particularly the problematic gear shifter and difficulties getting into neutral position. The automatic transmission problems initially showed up with rough shifting, followed by park brake engagement issues and eventually, starting problems. The transmission control unit was diagnosed as the root cause after comprehensive testing. My workshop performed a complete diagnostic scan which revealed multiple transmission-related error codes. The affected control unit required replacement, as it was no longer communicating properly with other vehicle systems. The total repair cost was 1000 Euro, including parts and labor. To properly assist with your case, could you provide: Current mileage, Any unusual sounds when shifting, Whether the issue appeared suddenly or gradually, Transmission service history, Specific error codes shown This information would help determine if your RS7 is experiencing the same control unit failure. The park brake and neutral position issues particularly sound familiar to what I encountered. Getting this fixed at a qualified workshop is crucial, as transmission issues can lead to more severe problems if left unaddressed. The proper diagnosis requires specialized diagnostic equipment to accurately pinpoint the control unit malfunction.

Thanks for the detailed response about transmission control unit problems. Last service was done at 55798 KM and included transmission fluid change. No unusual sounds occur during gear shifting, but the transmission failure happened quite suddenly after a routine drive. The main error code shown is P0706, which points to transmission range sensor circuit issues. I will schedule a diagnostic check at a workshop given how the transmission issues seem similar to your experience. The transmission sensor replacement cost estimate you shared helps with budgeting for potential repairs. Since my warranty just expired, I hope the repair costs stay reasonable if it turns out to be the same transmission failure you experienced. The important thing is getting an accurate diagnosis of the gear shifter problems before any major transmission repair work.

Based on the P0706 code and your description, this definitely matches the transmission range sensor circuit failure I experienced. The sudden onset without warning sounds exactly like my situation with the gear linkage problems. Since your transmission fluid was recently changed, we can likely rule out basic maintenance issues. The transmission repair in my case also started with similar error codes related to the range sensor, which caused the shift lock and starting problems. My transmission issues required the full control unit replacement because the range sensor is integrated into the unit. One thing to note, make sure they check the wiring harness connections first, as sometimes the symptoms can be caused by damaged wires rather than a failed unit. The repair cost estimate I provided earlier should still be fairly accurate for the control unit replacement. Some workshops might offer rebuilt units for around 600-700 Euro which could help reduce costs since you are outside warranty. Would definitely recommend getting it diagnosed soon, as continuing to drive with transmission issues risks more expensive damage. The gear shifter problems will likely worsen if the range sensor is truly failing like in my case.

Thanks for providing all those details on transmission control unit failures. Current mileage is 55798 KM with the last service including transmission fluid change. The transmission failure happened suddenly with no unusual noises during shifting. The error code showing is P0706, indicating transmission range sensor circuit problems. Given how similar these transmission issues seem to your case, I will schedule a diagnostic check at a workshop. The transmission sensor replacement cost estimate helps plan for potential repairs. Since my warranty just expired, hopefully repair costs stay within range if it turns out to be the same transmission failure. Most important is getting an accurate diagnosis of the automatic transmission problems before any major work. One follow up question, did you notice if the transmission issues got worse quickly after the initial symptoms appeared? Just trying to gauge how urgently I need to get this diagnosed, since I still occasionally have trouble getting into neutral position.
