S Klasse power tailgate issue

My 2007 Mercedes S Klasse with a gasoline engine is throwing a weird error. The power tailgate isn't opening fully, and I've got an error code related to the tailgate hall sensor in the error memory. I've got about 79580 km on the clock. From what I've read, it sounds like it could be a dodgy electrical sensor or maybe the sensor wiring itself. Has anyone else run into this? I'm trying to avoid a huge bill. I'm thinking it's a sensor fault, or at least I hope so!

Summary of the thread

A 2007 Mercedes S Klasse owner experienced an issue with the power tailgate not opening fully, accompanied by an error code related to the tailgate hall sensor. The problem was suspected to be due to a faulty electrical sensor or sensor wiring. Another individual with a similar issue suggested inspecting the sensor wiring and connectors, as a defective plug connection was the cause in their case. Following this advice, the owner found a loose connection at the sensor wiring, which was resolved by cleaning and reconnecting, restoring the tailgate's functionality.

I have experienced a similar issue with my S Klasse. The power tailgate malfunctioned intermittently, and diagnostics revealed a hall sensor fault. In my case, the issue stemmed from a defective plug connection. I would advise a thorough inspection of the sensor wiring and connectors before considering replacement of the tailgate motor. It may be a more cost-effective approach to resolve the problem.

Thanks for the quick reply! When you say 'plug connection', are we talking about the connector right at the electrical sensor itself, or further up the line? Was it obvious once you found it, like corrosion or a loose wire? I'm trying to get a handle on how deep I need to dive into this.

Yes, I am referring to the connector at the electrical sensor. Visual inspection did not reveal any obvious signs of corrosion or damage. However, after disconnecting and reconnecting the plug, the fault was temporarily resolved. It appears there was a poor connection. I recommend you visit a qualified workshop for accurate diagnosis and repair. The estimated repair cost of 95€ seems reasonable.

Just wanted to say thanks for the advice! Turns out, you were spot on. Took it to my usual mechanic, and it was indeed a loose connection at the sensor wiring. He cleaned it up, reconnected everything, and the tailgate is working perfectly again. Total cost was pretty much what you said it would be. Cheers!
