S2000 Active Hood Fault

I'm experiencing a weird issue with my 2003 Honda S2000 (gasoline engine). The on-board computer keeps displaying "Active hood fault", and the airbag warning lamp is constantly lit in the speedometer. I hooked it up to a diagnostic tool, and it's showing an error related to the active hood system. The spring actuators seem to be triggering at random times. Has anyone encountered something similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2003 Honda S2000 is experiencing an "Active hood fault" and a constantly lit airbag warning lamp. The issue is linked to the active hood system, with spring actuators triggering randomly. A faulty acceleration sensor, possibly due to corroded or damaged wiring, is suspected as the cause. The recommended solution is to have a professional workshop diagnose and replace the faulty sensor to resolve the issue.

That's a strange one! I had a somewhat comparable issue on my old Volvo V70. Same "pedestrian protection" system, and the error messages were similar. Turned out to be a faulty acceleration sensor. I'm wondering, have you checked the wiring and connections to the sensors in the front bumper? Those can get corroded or damaged, leading to false readings.

Thanks for the suggestion! I haven't specifically checked the wiring to the acceleration sensors yet. Where exactly are they located, and is there a specific way to test them to see if they're faulty? Also, do you know if a defective car sensor would cause the spring actuators to trigger?

On the Volvo, the sensors were behind the bumper, near the headlights. I didn't test them myself; I just took it to a workshop. But yes, a faulty sensor can definitely cause the system to activate randomly. If the system thinks there's been a collision, it will trigger the actuators. Honestly, given the airbag light, I'd advise against messing with it too much yourself. It's a safety system, and you don't want to accidentally deploy something or mess up the airbag deployment in a real crash. A scan with a proper diagnostic tool at a shop is likely your best bet. Be prepared to replace the sensor.

Okay, I appreciate the advice. I'll take it to a reputable workshop and have them diagnose the system properly. It was indeed the acceleration sensor, as you suspected. The final repair cost was 315€ including replacing the sensor and labor. Thanks again for your help!
