S2000 exhaust temperature sensor issue
Summary of the thread
A 2002 Honda S2000 owner experienced issues with the check engine light, reduced engine power, and increased fuel consumption. OBD-II codes indicated a faulty exhaust temperature sensor, and the owner suspected an exhaust system leak causing temperature fluctuations. A similar case revealed that a crack in the exhaust manifold near the sensor was the root cause. The recommended solution was to weld the crack and replace the sensor, which resolved the issue.

Thanks for the quick response! The temperature readings seem erratic – jumping up and down quite a bit, even at idle. I thought the sensor might be defective, but it sounds like the leak could be the root cause. Did you try replacing the sensor first, or did you immediately look for exhaust leaks?

I went straight to a shop. I figured I would mess something up. They found a small crack in the exhaust manifold near the sensor causing the weird temperature readings. They recommended welding the crack, and the sensor was replaced as a precaution. After that, everything returned to normal. Save yourself the headache and let a professional have a look.

Thanks for the insight! I appreciate you sharing your experience. Based on your suggestion, I took it to a local mechanic, and you were spot on – a small crack in the exhaust manifold right near the sensor. They welded the crack and replaced the faulty exhaust temperature sensor. The repair cost me about 265€, but now she's running like new again!

I had a similar issue with my S2000 a while back. Check engine light, sluggish performance...sound familiar. It was indeed related to the exhaust system and the temperature sensor. Was the temperature fluctuation huge or something marginal?
