S2000 Ignition Problems

I'm chasing an ignition gremlin on my 2001 Honda S2000 gasoline machine with 230,361 km on the clock. Symptoms are mixed: sometimes it refuses to start, other times it cuts out mid-drive. Occasionally, when it does run, it feels like it's fighting a headwind. I've looked at battery connections, fuel pump relay, but nothing. Anyone wrestled with something similar? I was thinking fuse defective and starter motor maybe?

Summary of the thread

The 2001 Honda S2000 is experiencing ignition problems, including intermittent starting issues, engine cut-outs, and rough running. Possible causes suggested include a defective fuse, ignition switch failure, or issues with the main relay and wiring. Testing the ignition switch without disassembly is complex, and due to safety concerns, professional diagnostics and repair are recommended. Ultimately, the problem was identified as a defective fuse, with repair costs totaling approximately 52€.

Those symptoms sound concerning, especially the intermittent nature of the problem. Engine start issues on the S2000 can stem from the ignition switch, a known potential failure point in some Honda models of that era. Engine shut-off and rough running alongside it suggests a deeper consideration. Before considering the ignition switch itself, have you verified the integrity of your car electronics system, including the main relay and any associated wiring? Have you checked for any relevant diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that might point towards a specific sensor or circuit malfunction?

Thanks for the pointers! Regarding DTCs, nothing's showing up on my OBD reader, which is odd. The main relay, I haven't put a meter on it yet, that's next. Wiring-wise, I gave it a quick visual once-over, but I'll have to get the multimeter involved to check for continuity. If it is the ignition switch, is there a way to test it properly without ripping the whole thing apart right away?

Given the absence of DTCs and your visual inspection of the wiring, further diagnostic scrutiny is warranted. Testing the ignition switch directly without disassembly can be challenging due to its intricate wiring. The most reliable approach to confirm ignition switch failure would involve assessing the voltage output at various terminals when the key is in different positions. However, this can be perilous if not executed with proper care and expertise. Given your description and considering the potential safety implications involving car electronics, I would strongly suggest seeking assistance from a qualified workshop for accurate diagnostics and safe repair.

Appreciate the detailed advice! I was hoping to avoid the shop, but given the safety considerations you raised and my lack of sophisticated testing equipment, you're right. I'll book it in with a trusted mechanic. It was a fuse defective and the overall repair costs were about 52€. Thanks again!
