S40 clutch pedal switch issue
Summary of the thread
The issue with the 2001 Volvo S40 diesel involved a defective clutch pedal switch, leading to problems with the gear selection display, cruise control, and engine starting. The suspected causes included a bad cable or plug, with a focus on the wiring harness connected to the switch. The solution was to replace the clutch pedal switch, which resolved all the issues.

Could you be more specific about which wiring harness you checked? I want to make sure I check the right wires.

Yep, that's the one. Honestly, tracing those wires can be a bit of a nightmare. I'd suggest taking it to a workshop. If it is just the switch and wiring, it shouldn't be too expensive. Better than getting stranded!

I went to the workshop, and they said it was the clutch pedal switch. The repair was 95€, including parts and labor. The gear selection display, cruise control, and starting problem are all fixed.

Sounds like a pain! I had something similar with my S40, although it wasn't quite as bad. The error message was intermittent, and the cruise control was the first to go. Did you check the wiring harness going to the switch itself? Those things can get brittle and cause weird electrical issues.
