S40 Diesel Exhaust Pressure Issue

I'm having trouble with my 2009 Volvo S40 diesel. I've noticed a warning light, and the engine power seems reduced. Also, there's smoke when I accelerate and a strong exhaust smell. The car has 132204 km on it. I'm thinking it might be something to do with the diesel particulate filter. I read somewhere it could be the exhaust pressure being too low. Anyone experienced anything similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2009 Volvo S40 diesel is experiencing reduced engine power, a warning light, smoke during acceleration, and a strong exhaust smell. The issue is suspected to be related to the diesel particulate filter or low exhaust pressure. A similar problem in another vehicle was resolved by addressing a faulty exhaust back pressure sensor. The suggested solution is to have the exhaust back pressure sensor checked and repaired by a professional, which successfully resolved the issue in this case.

Hey, that sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my old Peugeot 308, although it was a petrol engine. Same symptoms though - warning light, loss of power, and a weird smell. In my case, it turned out to be a faulty sensor related to the exhaust system. Could be worth checking out the pressure sensor like you mentioned.

Thanks for the info! Do you remember which sensor it was specifically? And how difficult was it to get fixed?

I don't remember the exact name of the sensor, sorry. But I do remember the mechanic saying it was related to exhaust back pressure. Honestly, I didn't attempt the repair myself; I just took it to a workshop. Saved myself a headache. It's probably best to get it checked out professionally, especially with the smoke and smell.

Okay, thanks for the advice. I'll take it to a workshop and mention the exhaust back pressure sensor. Turns out you were spot on. The garage confirmed it was the exhaust back pressure sensor. Repair cost me 245€, but at least it's fixed now!
