S40 diesel preheating lamp issue
Summary of the thread
A 2003 S40 diesel is experiencing issues with the preheating lamp staying on, the check engine light being illuminated, and smoking under acceleration. The suspected causes are a faulty glow control unit or a problematic cable connection. It is suggested to conduct a diagnostic test to confirm the issue, as similar problems have been resolved by addressing faulty connections in the control unit. A mechanic visit is recommended to properly diagnose and fix the problem.

Thanks! Faulty connection seems likely, given the symptoms. No diagnostic test yet, wanted to check if anyone else had a similar issue before paying for it. Do you remember where the faulty connection was located? Easy to spot?

Don't remember the exact location, somewhere deep within the engine bay, beyond my abilities. Get it checked by a workshop; electrical issues are a pain without the right tools. Best case: loose wire. Worst case: check engine fault codes. Cost me about 80€ + VAT, included a new connector and labor.

Thanks! Suspected as much. Sounds like a mechanic visit. Will post the solution. Got a quote for 95€ including diagnostic test and glow control unit connector replacement; hopefully, that solves it.

Sounds frustrating! Similar issue with my old Renault Megane, though not the same symptoms. Engine misfired and check engine light was on. Turned out to be a faulty connection in the control unit. Diagnostic test to confirm the glow control unit?
