S40 Diesel Reduced Engine Power and Smoke
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Volvo S40 diesel with only 37,930 km is experiencing reduced engine power and excessive smoke, likely due to a blocked diesel particulate filter (DPF). The issue was initially suspected to be the DPF, but without diagnostic confirmation, other sensor faults could mimic these symptoms. A workshop visit confirmed the DPF was defective, and replacing it resolved the problem.

Backpressure hasn't been checked, but I don't have the kit. No warning lights on the dash, so I didn't bother checking for codes. Inspection was a year ago. Any idea what a new DPF would set me back?

Symptoms strongly point to a defective diesel particulate filter. Without diagnostic confirmation, filter replacement is a gamble, and sensor faults can mimic DPF issues. Workshop visit is advisable.

Cheers for the advice! Bit the bullet and took it to a garage. Turns out the DPF was completely shot. Cost me 1550€ for a new one, but at least it's sorted.

Sounds like a blocked DPF. Has the backpressure been checked? Any fault codes showing up? When was the vehicle last inspected?
