S40 rough running and exhaust smell

My 2007 Volvo S40 gasoline engine has a check engine light, rough running, exhaust leak, and strong exhaust smell. It has 74263 km. Could it be a defective lambda sensor?

Sounds familiar. I've got an S40 too. Had a similar issue with the exhaust. Check the oxygen sensor and the exhaust pipe for leaks. Could also be the EGR valve.

Yes, all the same symptoms. Rough running, the smell, and the check engine light. I tried a few things myself, but honestly, I'd just take it to a workshop. They'll sort it quicker and you won't be pulling your hair out.
