S40 Transmission Issues

Hey, I've got a 2002 Volvo S40 diesel with about 147,000 km. My transmission's acting up. Paddle shifters don't work, gearbox slips, gear changes are rough, and there's grinding. Paddle shifters respond slowly when they work. It's gone into emergency mode a couple times, and diagnostics showed an error. Think it's the transmission control unit?

Sounds like the TCU, yeah. Is the error code related to the transmission control module?

The error code was related to the transmission control module. If it's the TCU, can it be repaired, or does it need replacing? And can I do it myself, or does it need special tools?

If the error code points directly to the TCU, and the symptoms align, it's highly probable. Repair can be attempted, but replacement is often more reliable. Needs specialist tools and diagnostic equipment. Find a workshop.

Thanks! That confirms my suspicions. I'll book a workshop to inspect/replace the transmission control unit. Just got a quote for 1000€… ouch!
