S60 Camshaft Sensor Failure
Summary of the thread
The 2004 Volvo S60 diesel is experiencing starting difficulties, stalling, and an illuminated check engine light. These issues could be attributed to a faulty camshaft sensor, especially given the vehicle's mileage of 224,721 km. A defective encoder wheel on the camshafts was also suggested as a potential cause. The problem was resolved by replacing both the camshaft sensor and the encoder wheel.

Thanks. How likely is the encoder wheel defective if I haven't checked the ignition timing yet?

If the ignition timing hasn't been checked, it's harder to say, but with those symptoms, I'd strongly suspect an encoder wheel issue. Might be worth getting it checked by a workshop.

Just got back from the workshop. You were right, the camshaft sensor was defective, and the encoder wheel needed replacement. Total cost was 695€. Thanks for the help!

Sounds familiar. I've seen similar behavior on my S60. Is it throwing any camshaft position error codes? Could be the encoder wheel on the camshafts themselves.
