S60 Diesel Crankcase Issue

I'm having trouble with my 2001 Volvo S60 diesel. It has served me for 29865 kilometers but now the check engine light is on and off, with a reduction in engine power. Also, I've seen smoke when accelerating. I suspect a crankcase ventilation system issue, especially the crankcase ventilation valve. Has anyone had a similar issue with their Volvo S60, and could you share your diagnostic process?

Summary of the thread

A 2001 Volvo S60 diesel is experiencing intermittent check engine light activation, reduced engine power, and smoke during acceleration, potentially due to a crankcase ventilation system issue, particularly the crankcase ventilation valve. Similar symptoms in another vehicle were caused by a clogged valve leading to pressure buildup and poor engine performance. Suggested solutions include checking for vacuum leaks, increased oil consumption, and engine vibration, with a recommendation to consult a mechanic for a smoke test and accurate diagnosis.

I had a similar issue with my 2014 Opel Insignia diesel. The symptoms you describe – check engine light, power loss, and smoke – sound very familiar. In my case, it was a clogged crankcase ventilation valve, causing a buildup of pressure in the crankcase, leading to oil leaks and poor engine performance. Did you notice any unusual smells or sounds, like a whistling noise at idle? The whistling can indicate a vacuum leak in the ventilation system.

Thanks for your insights. I appreciate you sharing your experience with the Opel Insignia. I haven't detected any distinct whistling noises at idle, but I have noticed a slight increase in engine vibration, mostly at lower RPMs. Could the absence of whistling sounds mean a different crankcase ventilation malfunction or a blockage elsewhere in the system? What other problems did you have besides the typical symptoms?

Okay, the absence of whistling could mean something slightly different, but it still points towards crankcase ventilation issues. In my case, besides the check engine light, power loss, and smoke, I also noticed increased oil consumption. Even without the whistling noise, the increased vibration you are experiencing could be related to the crankcase pressure. Honestly, given the symptoms and your initial suspicion, the best thing to do might be to take it to a trusted mechanic. They can perform a smoke test to pinpoint any leaks in the system and accurately diagnose the problem. That's what I did eventually.

I appreciate your comprehensive advice. Based on your experiences and recommendations, I'll get a qualified mechanic for a diagnostic assessment. The repair cost is about 360€, including replacing the crankcase ventilation valve and a system check. Thanks again for sharing your experience.
