S60 rain light sensor fault
Summary of the thread
A 2005 Volvo S60 experienced a rain-light sensor fault, affecting automatic wipers, headlight control, and speedometer dimming. The issue was traced to bubbles forming under the gel pad on the windshield, disrupting the sensor's function. Replacing the sensor and gel pad resolved the problem, restoring normal operation.

Bubbles under the gel pad, you say? I'll check that tomorrow. Could that really cause all those symptoms? It seems like a fairly minor thing.

Yes, it’s more common than one might expect. The bubbles interfere with the sensor's ability to properly detect light and moisture. It throws everything off, as the system integrates the rain sensor data with the headlight and instrument panel dimming functions. I recommend taking it to a workshop and having it checked.

Thanks for the tip! I checked, and sure enough, there were bubbles. Took it to a shop; they replaced the sensor and gel pad for 62€. Everything is working normally again.

I had a similar issue with my S60 some time ago. Do you see any bubbles forming under the gel pad on the windshield where the sensor sits? That can cause all sorts of weird electrical issues.
