S60 Transmission Control Unit Issue

Hi, I'm having issues with my 2007 Volvo S60, gasoline engine, with 249548 km. The paddle shifters don't work, and the gearbox slips when it shifts. There's also a grinding noise during gear changes. The paddles feel slow, and the gearbox seems stuck in emergency mode. I scanned the car and there's an error code pointing to the TCU. Anyone seen something similar?

Summary of the thread

The 2007 Volvo S60 is experiencing issues with paddle shifters not working, gearbox slipping, and a grinding noise during gear changes, with the gearbox appearing stuck in emergency mode. An error code from a scan points to a potential problem with the Transmission Control Unit (TCU). The suggested solution is to have the TCU checked by a professional workshop, as it may need replacement due to possible defects or failures.

Oh, that sounds rough. I had a similar nightmare with my old BMW 3 Series. All the symptoms you describe sound like a defective transmission control unit. The TCU is like the brain of your transmission, and when it goes bad, it throws the whole system into chaos. Imagine a conductor whose baton suddenly turns into a rubber chicken – the orchestra's gonna be all over the place! Has the car been exposed to high temperatures or humidity recently?

Interesting analogy! No, I don't think so, and I'm surprised that you recognized the issue immediately. How did you fix your BMW back then?

Well, for my 3 series, I did end up replacing the TCU. Turns out, those units are quite sensitive to voltage spikes and internal component failures. I should say that diagnosis is hard without pro-grade tools. From your description, I'd say you should have it checked by a workshop to be on the safe side. Even though replacing it solved the issues on my BMW, I think it's better to let a pro take a look, before shelling out 1000€.

Thanks a lot for the info! I was afraid it would come down to that. I'll take it to a trusted workshop, and I'll tell them to check the TCU. I really appreciate your help, it saved me a lot of time and probably money.
