S60 transmission oil pressure sensor fault

Alright Volvo gurus, I'm pulling my hair out here. My 2004 Volvo S60 with a gasoline engine is throwing some serious tantrums. The MIL is on, and it's screaming about a transmission oil pressure sensor fault. It's got 154762 km on the clock. Now, it's gone into some kind of emergency mode, shifts like a drunken sailor, and makes these lovely grinding noises that make me want to cry. The error memory is full of complaints. Anyone else seen this joyful symphony of problems? Could it really just be low on oil?

Summary of the thread

A 2004 Volvo S60 was experiencing a transmission oil pressure sensor fault, causing the vehicle to enter emergency mode with rough shifting and grinding noises. The issue was suspected to be related to low transmission oil levels. After checking and topping off the transmission fluid, along with replacing the sensor and checking for leaks, the problem was resolved, restoring normal vehicle operation.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I have an S60 and had similar symptoms a while back. Tranny issues are never fun, are they? Did you check the oil level? The sensor is pretty sensitive, and low fluid can definitely trigger it. Was it shifting rough before the light came on, or did it all happen at once?

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't checked the oil level yet – it completely slipped my mind in my panic! Was your issue completely resolved by topping off the oil, or was there more to it? And how easy is it to check the transmission fluid on these things anyway?

Topping off the oil solved my issues for a short time, however, the light came back on eventually. You'll need to check for leaks. I would suggest taking it to a shop. They will have the correct tools to diagnose it properly.

You were spot on! Took it to my mechanic, and yup, gearbox oil level was too low, causing the sensor fault. A quick top-up, leak check and a new sensor and I'm back on the road, 365€ lighter, but hey, no more grinding! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
