S60 Water Sensor Issue

My 2012 Volvo S60 diesel is throwing a wrench in my plans. The check engine light is on, and I pulled the codes – something about a water sensor malfunction. Engine's running rough too. Mileage is at 100593 km. I checked for loose connections, but no luck. Anyone else run into this?

Summary of the thread

A 2012 Volvo S60 diesel exhibited a check engine light and rough engine performance, with diagnostic codes indicating a water sensor malfunction. Initial checks for loose connections were inconclusive. A suggestion to inspect the wiring harness and connections led to the discovery of a corroded connector on the water sensor. Cleaning and replacing part of the wiring resolved the issue, restoring smooth engine operation.

I had a similar issue with my S60. Same symptoms – check engine light, rough running. Was it the water sensor specifically? I'm asking because there are a few sensors that could cause similar problems. Have you checked the sensor's wiring harness for any damage or corrosion?

Yeah, the error code pointed directly to the water sensor. I visually inspected the wiring and the plug as best I could, but didn't see anything obvious like frayed wires or corrosion. Is there anything specific I should be looking for, or any common problem areas with the wiring harness?

For me, it turned out to be a dodgy connection at the plug itself. It looked fine at first glance, but the mechanic wiggled it around and the engine immediately started running rougher. He suggested the cable or plug connection of the component may be defective. Ended up being a quick fix, but I wouldn't have found it myself. Probably best to get it checked at a workshop.

Thanks for the tip. I took it to the shop, and you were spot on – it was a corroded connector on the water sensor. They cleaned it up and replaced a small section of the wiring. Cost me 95€, but the engine's running smooth again. Appreciate the help!
