S80 Air Intake Leak
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Volvo S80 owner experienced higher fuel consumption, a check engine light, and a loud hissing sound when accelerating, indicating a potential air intake system leak. The mechanic suggested that the issue might be due to a cracked intake hose. Replacing the intake hose resolved the problem, improving fuel efficiency and eliminating the hissing noise.

The car has 64783 km. Is it possible to patch the intake hose temporarily, or is replacement the only real option?

Patching might work in a pinch, but it's like putting a band-aid on a broken leg – temporary at best. The crack will just keep expanding. You're better off replacing it to avoid further issues. If you aren't comfortable doing this yourself, go to the workshop. They will quickly find the leak in the air intake system.

Thanks for the advice. I replaced the intake hose; the total repair cost was around 100€. That solved the problem.

Hissing and bad fuel economy? Sounds like a vacuum cleaner trying to suck up a golf ball! Seriously though, that hissing is a classic symptom of an air intake leak. Have you checked the intake hose between the air filter and the intake manifold? Those things crack and leak like crazy, especially on older cars. How many kilometers are on the car?
