S80 Diesel Engine Stalling
Summary of the thread
A 2003 Volvo S80 diesel is experiencing stalling at idle, reduced engine power, and a check engine light. The suspected cause is a defective fuel volume regulator, potentially due to a high pressure pump issue. A workshop confirmed the high pressure pump was indeed defective, leading to the malfunction of the fuel volume regulator. The recommended solution is to have the high pressure pump repaired or replaced by a professional to resolve the issue.

I have not checked the fuel pressure readings. I am getting a code indicating a fuel volume regulator issue. Would that align with your experience?

Yep, that code points right to it. Honestly, with those symptoms, I'd bet money on it being the regulator or the pump itself. Bit beyond my DIY skills, so I'd recommend taking it to a trusted workshop to confirm. Could save you a headache down the road.

Thank you for the advice. The workshop confirmed the high pressure pump was defective and causing the fuel volume regulator to malfunction. Repair cost was 1510€.

Whoa, sounds familiar! I had similar issues with my S80. Check engine light, stalling... the whole shebang. Have you checked the fuel pressure readings? What codes are you pulling?
