S80 Gear Shift Indicator Failure
Summary of the thread
The gear shift indicator on a 2011 Volvo S80 diesel is not functioning, leading to difficulties in engaging gears, slipping automatic transmission, and grinding noises. Possible causes include a defective control unit, as experienced by another owner with similar symptoms. Checking the transmission fluid level is suggested, but professional diagnosis and repair at a workshop are recommended to resolve the issue.

Thanks for the reply! No, nothing specific triggered it, it just gradually got worse over a couple of weeks. I haven't checked the transmission fluid level yet; I will do it tomorrow. Was your problem exactly the same though – a completely dead display, slipping gears, and those awful noises?

Yep, pretty much exactly the same symptoms. The display was totally blank, and the gearbox was behaving like it had a mind of its own. In my case, it turned out to be a defective control unit. Given the mileage you mentioned, which is close to mine (100757 km), I would suggest a visit to a workshop to get it professionally diagnosed. I ended up paying around 1000€ for the repair.

Thanks a lot, that's really helpful! I'll book it in at the workshop. Sounds like it could be the same issue. Knowing what to expect makes it a little less stressful. I appreciate you sharing your experience!

Sounds familiar. I've got an S80 too, and I had similar issues with the gearbox a while back. The gear selection display went haywire, and the shifting became really erratic. Was there any specific event that triggered it, or did it just start happening out of the blue? Also, have you checked the basics, like the fluid level in the transmission?
