S80 Overheating Active Air Flap Fault

Hi, I have a 2013 Volvo S80 diesel with 121505 km. The check engine light is on, and the engine overheats. Diagnostic points to active air flap fault. Suspect defective electromechanism.

Oh wow, overheating is never fun! I had something similar happen on my S80. Was it throwing any specific fault codes related to the grille shutter? Those flaps are supposed to open and close to regulate airflow to the radiator. If they're stuck closed, especially in warmer weather, it could definitely cause overheating. You might also want to check the wiring harness and connector to the electromechanism itself for any signs of damage or corrosion. Sometimes a simple bad connection can trigger the check engine light. Have you done a diagnostic scan?

Thanks for your reply. Fault code indicates an issue with the electromechanism itself. Wiring seems ok. Did you have to replace the whole assembly?

Yes, that's exactly what happened to me. I tried troubleshooting the electromechanism, but honestly, it was a pain to get to, and I didn't have the right tools. Plus, I didn't want to risk further damage. In the end, I took it to a workshop, and they confirmed that the electromechanism was indeed faulty. I ended up replacing the entire active grille shutter assembly. They quoted me 590€ including parts and labor. Given your symptoms and the fault code pointing directly to the electromechanism, I would suggest the same thing.

Ok, thanks for confirming. Will take it to the shop.
