S80 Overheating

My 2007 Volvo S80 with a gasoline engine is overheating like crazy! The check engine light is on, and I'm pretty sure it's the radiator fan not kicking in properly. I've checked the coolant level, and it's fine. No weird noises from the fan itself. Could it be a relay or something?

Summary of the thread

A 2007 Volvo S80 is experiencing overheating issues, with the check engine light on, likely due to the radiator fan not functioning properly. The coolant level is adequate, and the fan blade spins freely, suggesting a possible electrical issue. A faulty speed sensor is identified as a potential cause, and after professional diagnosis, replacing the speed sensor resolves the problem, restoring the cooling fan's operation.

I had a similar issue with my S80. Check the speed sensor; sometimes, a faulty sensor can cause the fan to malfunction. Is the fan blade spinning freely?

Speed sensor, huh? Where is that located, and how would I test it? And yes, the fan blade spins freely, no problem there.

It's near the radiator. Honestly, without proper equipment, testing can be tricky. Considering your symptoms, I’d take it to a workshop and have them diagnose it. I bet a defective speed sensor is the root cause.

You were right! Took it to the shop, and it was indeed the speed sensor. New sensor, and now the cooling fan works perfectly. Total cost: 250€. Thanks a lot for your help!
